ITV TV Interview: CR Plus Sponsor the Future  - 17th March 2023

Last night it was good to see Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) PhD student Ben White, sponsored by CR Plus, featured on ITV Wales news. Ben is helping CR Plus efforts in helping de-risk the transition of combustion processes from Natural Gas to cleaner fuels like Hydrogen in the SWIC (South Wales Industrial Cluster) area.

Ben’s exposure to direct industrial problems/sites, working with CR Plus teams and having access to the superb facilities at the GTRC is providing him with the right balance of skills that will be able to exploit innovation. This crucially will start to develop our much needed talent pool and enhance CR Plus capabilities to properly support industry in understanding/de-risking impacts of fuel switching on our earlier adopter projects.

CR Plus were so impressed with this joint Academic/Industrial approach that we recently sponsored a second CDT student Karolina. Karolina is helping research opportunities in utilising the gases/products available in the Net Zero transition to create added value/security of supply for the South Wales area and feeding into our work in the emerging Cluster in the West Midlands.

This demonstrates that it is not just large companies that can benefit from these sort of programmes, smaller companies can also extract real value, add to the talent pool and build on the strengthening Academic-Industrial relationships.

Well done Ben & Andrew Price (his CR Plus mentor) for making this happen with support from Richard Marsh & team at GTRC.

A true collaboration.

CR Plus Lead Roadmap for South Wales Industrial Cluster - April 2020

CR Plus are leading the SWIC (South Wales Industrial Cluster) Roadmap project and are providing a key role in the Deployment project. SWIC has received a significant boost with the allocation of grant funding from UK Research and Innovation. The funding will support the first phase of the South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC) Roadmap and Deployment projects which will seek to identify the best options for cost-effective decarbonisation of industry in South Wales. The projects will look at the infrastructure required for the development of the hydrogen economy, for large scale CO2 capture, usage and storage (CCUS) and transport as well as onsite strategic opportunities specific to each industry.

The projects will make a vital contribution to the UK’s journey to net zero 2050, and also have the potential to strengthen the economic resilience of Welsh industry and communities by ensuring operations in the region are sustainable for the long term.

We are part of a cluster that comprises a diverse set of industries including oil refining, paper, nickel, insulation, chemicals, LNG import, coin production, general manufacturing, steel and cement. If the SWIC proceeds successfully through the various phases of the UK government’s Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge, it would stimulate significant clean growth, creating more jobs and opening up opportunities nationally and internationally for UK businesses. It would also enhance the UK’s ability to locally manufacture cement and steel products with low carbon emissions, helping to drive the low carbon future of UK construction and other sectors such as defence, car manufacturing and coin production.

Roadmap Partners: CR Plus, RWE, Progressive Energy, University of South Wales, Celsa Manufacturing, Tata Steel, the Port of Milford Haven and Vale Europe. It will draw heavily on the Deployment project and smaller, local hub solutions to deliver a plan that establishes a series of local zero carbon areas that will lower local emissions, create skilled jobs, improve air quality and enhance well-being across the South Wales region.

Tony Parton, Managing Director at CR Plus said: “This collaboration provides exciting new opportunities for established industry and the developing net zero carbon industrial sector to transform South Wales into a vibrant ‘just’ economy whilst providing real clean growth.”

The phase one Deployment project focuses on the potential to create collaborative projects in areas with a significant portion of the economic activity in South Wales: Port Talbot with Tata Steel’s integrated steelworks, Aberthaw with Tarmac’s Cement Works and Milford Haven with Valero Energy’s Refinery and RWE’s CCGT Power Plant.

The Deployment project, led by Costain, will bring together partners Tata Steel, Tarmac, RWE, Valero Energy, Progressive Energy, CR Plus, Capital Law, Flexible Process Consultants and the University of South Wales to collaboratively identify ways to tackle common and unique challenges of decarbonisation and clean growth, ultimately helping the UK to establish the world’s first net zero carbon industrial cluster by 2040 and at least one low carbon cluster by 2030.

Work on the larger, potential anchor projects and other industrial sites in South Wales will identify process improvements and assess the viability of clean fuels to reduce carbon emissions, as well as look at Carbon Capture Usage and Storage (CCUS), identifying what existing infrastructure can be used and what new infrastructure will be required.

Together the projects will look to provide the capacity for a future circular economy so that in the long term, captured carbon that cannot be used locally by other industries such as agriculture will be shipped to national CCUS facilities such as HyNet at Liverpool Bay or Acorn at St Fergus. SWIC will also develop options and solutions to support regional hydrogen deployment in order to facilitate net zero carbon by 2050.

This first phase is a step towards securing a further share of the £131m allocated to the Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge by the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and is a key component of the government’s Clean Growth Strategy.

Methane No. & Your CHP – Are you de-risked? - March 2019

Our internal CHP expert has raised an interesting point on the selection of CHP engines. The grid Methane Number is generally dropping, yet the super-efficient engines are requiring higher Methane No.’s. With the trend to decarbonise the gas grid by Bio-Methane or H2 injection over the next few years, your selection of engine/systems will be key to the commercial success of your undertaking.

If you want further information, please contact Tom Gibson or Tony Parton by email or 01543 223393.

Making Decarbonisation Pay - February 2019

CR Plus Ltd give their views on the decarbonisation challenge, setting the scene with an overview of their work currently being undertaken at a UK Industrial site. This decarbonisation ‘direction of travel’ would yield £200M for this particular site by 2050.

South Wales Industrial Cluster - February 2019

CR plus are engaged in the development of the ‘South Wales Industrial cluster’: a group formed of major industrial , academic and energy engineering specialists with the aim of collaborating to align with the strategic direction of the department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy and of the Welsh Government. To meet our ambitious decarbonisation targets the gathering of large CO2 emitters in the South Wales area, along with people who can provide innovative solutions to reduce these emissions, is very necessary. CR Plus recently attended the first briefing meeting on the 14th January 2019 and look forward to supporting the development of the cluster and associated sustainable smart integrated projects at the next meeting on 18th March 2019.

Sustainability West Midlands Registered Member - January 2019

IPCC Report Global Warming of 1.5°C - October 2018

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have published their report, “Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C”, on the 8th October and in it details the action needed to limit climate change to within 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and outlines how ambitious an action this really is. One of the messages in the report is: for 1.5°C to be achieved, there needs to be, globally, a 45% decrease in CO2 levels by 2030 and achieve ‘net zero’ by 2050!

CR Plus are working with clients to make the demanding aims that lead to this achievement a reality. One of our core clients is working with us to achieve zero abstraction of water from the canal and reduce their discharge to river by ~85%; we’re working with another client to accomplish a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions; and we’re currently involved in discussions with stakeholders of the South Wales cluster (BEIS, universities, and industries) to optimise their systems and reduce the CO2 released by the large emitters in the UK. We’re also in the process of designing a new heat transfer fluid system to reduce our client’s natural gas consumption and also mean the system can be easily adaptable to alternative decarbonised fuel sources, for example hydrogen, in the future.

These projects, and others, are all part of the small steps that industries and other sectors need to take to decarbonise. CR Plus can help you realise these projects with our innovative ideas working directly with client’s aims, end-to-end project management, and funding procurement.

For an easier read of the IPCC report the press report summarises it quite succinctly.

Storm Ali leads to low carbon intensity - September 2018

Current± Article
It seems like Storm Ali is not all bad news as some parts of the UK have had particularly low carbon intensity levels due to the high winds powering many wind farms. Mid-Scotland, for example, managed to achieve just 12 gCO2/kWh!

However, this news does still point to the very variable nature of wind power and the need for improvements to grid battery technology to make use of this low carbon energy.

We're having discussions with clients on the limit of the renewable technology at the moment especially in regards to the EV push that, although is the right step, will put a temporary burden on the fossil fuels in the future.

Scottish government investing early into electric vehicles - September 2018

Current± Article
The Scottish government are looking to be forward thinking in this early investment into electric vehicle (EV) charge points. In an attempt to progress some way towards the ambitious aim of removing the need petrol and diesel cars in the UK, the Scottish government is looking towards ultra-low emissions vehicles (ULEV) and EV by installing ‘electric towns’ across Scotland.

We are currently talking with clients about the potential future of EVs within their car parks and whether anyone has the infrastructure and capacity to adapt to these changes. Now seems to be the time to look at the risks involved in this adoption, but we see it as an opportunity for many. Do you have any questions or interesting comments on this? We’d love to hear it!

Silo’d Thinking can Create a Mess? - August 2018

BBC Article
The BBC article on recycled packaging in landfill sites demonstrates that sometimes we think we are doing the right thing but it quite doesn’t work out how we wanted it to.

To do the “Right Thing” is becoming increasingly difficult as knowing what actually is “Right Thing” to do from the myriad of options is challenging.

We are currently working with some of our clients to help structure their approach using a wide ranging Risk & Opportunity tool (BROP) as a prompt to opening up “Out of the box thinking”. One surprising outcome is that it is delivering twice as many opportunities as risks in the early phases of the project journey, as well as clear direction.

CR Plus Enables Major Semiconductor Plant to Transition to ISO 14001:2015 with No Nonconformances - May 2018

We are delighted to announce that our environmental management system work with a major semiconductor plant client enabled this high-profile business to transition to ISO 14001:2015 with no nonconformances.

Essentially, the work comprised of two distinct stages:

1. Developing the environmental context of the organisation into wider sustainability:

a. By helping our client to broaden the scope of the environmental management system from the traditional area of control (focussing on environmental risks at site) to the broader area of influence, particularly the global carbon benefits of their products in use in the automotive, medical, industrial, consumer, telecom and high power solutions industries.
b. By developing visual presentations used to successfully communicate the broader scope throughout the organisation, with appropriate proof of learning.

2. Gap Analysis and Deployment Support:

a. Carrying out a detailed gap analysis of current practices versus each clause of the ISO 14001:2015 standard
b. Providing absolute clarity of the actions required to address the gaps identified so that the highly motivated site team could address them effectively and efficiently.
c. Providing technical support throughout deployment.

Feedback from the client has been extremely positive – the HSE Manager provided a testimonial:

‘Our site was due to upgrade to ISO 14001-2015 Standard we engaged CR Plus to carry out a gap analysis against the new standard. By using the CR Plus gap analysis to plug the gaps and add the new requirements the site sailed through the transition audit with no major or minor non-conformities. Well done CR Plus!’

Is Demand Management Still Viable? - May 2018

The April 2018 changes in UK Electricity distribution charges - DCP228 Red, Amber Green (RAG) - will affect your monthly bills. Doesn’t help the CR Plus MD who is colour blind.

For example, If you are a HV half hourly metered manufacturer with a relatively high consistent base load (i.e. you use a high proportion of your electricity in the green and amber periods) it is bad news, your bill could increase by 10 to 20%.

This change is also particularly important to those who have made efforts to shift RED (peak time of day) consumption into the amber and green hours, either via on site generation or demand side consumption shifting.

The bottom line? Review your profile of usage, look for opportunities to optimise to the new charging structure and Make sure your Risk & Opportunity profiling is up to date if considering on site generation or demand side management.

DCP161 was also introduced in April, which in summary will see end users charged approximately 3 times standard rate if they exceed their contracted electrical  supply capacity.

With the ever changing market and the impact it has on energy management decisions, get in touch with Richard Pyatt to discuss how you might best take advantage of the recent structural tariff changes.

Sweden Leads the Way – the World’s First Electrified Road - April 2018

A huge step forward in the push for the use of electric transport - the electrified road recharges vehicles on a stretch of 2km between Arlanda and Roserberg logistics area.

How does it work?
“Energy is transferred from two tracks of rail in the road via a movable arm attached to the bottom of a vehicle. The design is not dissimilar to that of a Scalextric track, although should the vehicle overtake, the arm is automatically disconnected."

The eRoadArlanda project claims:
- the concept utilises existing infrastructure
- is suitable for all – cars, buses and trucks
- carbon emissions will be cut by 80-90%.

This is part of the Swedish government’s wider environmental target to create fossil-free transportation infrastructure by 2030-2050. However it is a costly project, at €1m per km.

UK Grid Electricity - Achieves zero coal over 3 days but natural gas still an important contributor? - How does this type of news help you take positive action at your site level? - April 2018

There is much debate about how the UK mix of power and heat generation will evolve over the coming years and decades as we continue to target ‘80%’ Carbon reduction by 2050 and as we continue to invest in ‘smarter’ energy systems.

The latest news of UK reliance on Coal reaching 0% for 3 consecutive days is encouraging. Coal contributed 30% of the electricity generation mix in 2015 and then only 15% in 2016. Renewables increased to ~25% by 2016 (the target is for ~30% by 2020). Renewable ‘consumption’ for energy overall for the UK is still just over 10%. While the share of coal has reduced though, the share of gas has increased.

The use of gas in the wider UK energy mix is ultimately higher still, given that there will be embedded generation within the distribution systems (gas fired generators and in particular gas fired Combined Heat and Power systems), plus the significant amount of gas used for heating (majority of domestic heating) and industrial/manufacturing process. Renewables contribution to electricity production may be increasing but contribution to transport and to heat generation still puts the UK behind target. UK reliance on fossil fuel for power generation remains above 50% and for heating and transport well in excess of that.

Things to consider when reviewing replacement of your equipment on site or when considering new on site generation equipment:
  1. Energy efficiency on the demand side is ultimately the best first approach.
  2. Gas price v electricity price > at the moment this makes gas based technology such as gas fired CHP financially attractive (particularly given the maturity of the technology).
  3. Gas carbon intensity v grid electricity carbon intensity. The former remains constant whereas the latter is reducing as the renewable share increases. You could however argue that every kWh of energy saved at the demand side is an opportunity to focus primarily on reducing fossil fuel dependency on an average basis.
  4. Infrastructural situations around the UK > the electrical transmission and distribution systems for example require significant investments. It is not straight forward to achieve a ‘smarter’ system with enough resilience to demand changes coupled with an increasing share of intermittent supply (both grid and embedded)

Ultimately, you want to understand a true life cycle analysis and commercial and sustainable business case from all angles > CR Plus experts can review both the strategic and detailed technical angles to help give clarity on which options might best suit your specific situation.

Combined Heat and Power - does it still stack up? - September 2017

With the publishing of the latest DEFRA carbon conversion factors, many organisations will have noted the 15% drop in electricity carbon between 2016 and 2017 official figures. Here at CR Plus, we have been asked a few times recently whether Combined Heat and Power (CHP) still stacks up.

At the simplest level, using typical CHP efficiencies consider the following simple representation:

3 kWh gas = 0.55 kgCO2e

For the same heat and electrical ‘service’ via boilers and the UK electrical system would result in a carbon footprint of around 0.72 kgCO2e. So at the simplest level it can be seen that there is still a strong case that CHP saves carbon over the typical alternative. Indeed for parity between the typical solution and CHP, the carbon footprint of the UK electricity supply (including distribution losses) would have to be lower than 0.22 kgCO2e – a drop of 43% in electrical carbon intensity in 2017. Therefore it would appear to be safe to assume CHP will remain a viable carbon saving option for the foreseeable future.

However, this level of analysis involves one significant assumption. The implicit assumption is that the 1kWh of electricity generated via CHP offsets the grid average. This is not a safe assumption on the basis that sun continues to shine and the wind continues to blow independent of whether the CHP is operational. What is dependent on the CHP is the level of non-renewable electricity grid generation capacity that has to be active. The International Energy Agency states the global average fossil fuel generation capacity is 35-37% efficient (link), which shows the true carbon saving of CHP can be significantly higher. Whether deliberate or not, the different carbon factors used during Building Emission Rate (BER) and Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) better reflect the operational realities for CHP.

Beyond the carbon calculations, the changes in Climate Change Levy with exemptions for organisations with Good Quality CHP and Enhanced Capital Allowances means that CHP continues to deliver attractive returns on paper. Sadly, many CHP schemes fail to perform at their expected levels, and this continues to be an area where CR Plus is retained by clients to deliver and go-beyond the expected savings.

Looking over the horizon, hydrogen as a low carbon derived gas is expected to gain increasing traction. From a carbon perspective this will reduce the carbon footprint of CHP operations, ensuring the point of parity is extended further into the future.

If you are thinking of implementing CHP or would like to optimise an existing CHP system, please get in touch.

ISO 9001 and 14001 2015: Impact of Technology on ISO systems - August 2017

The 2015 edition of the 9001 and 14001 standards appear to have been adapted to keep pace with application of emerging technologies. Whilst document management systems and tools such as Minitab for statistical process control have long since been adopted by many organisations, the 2015 transition will likely see the increased use of different software technologies across the management system.

Knowledge is a resource like any other

Knowledge is treated as a resource like any other resource class in the latest standards. Management of organisational knowledge, closing of knowledge gaps and succession planning come under increasing scrutiny, particularly as the organisational strategy adapts to changing market conditions.

Training and competency management

Some best practice organisations are already using hybrids of video and computer animation (augmented reality) training videos with QR codes on machinery to demonstrate how procedures and work instructions should be undertaken – thus reducing paper documents and engaging staff with varying language competencies. The ability to test competency and understanding of procedures can be worked into the online experience, ensuring staff competency is regularly updated and recorded

Audit apps

The broadening use of smart phones continues with the increasing proliferation of audit apps for ISO 9001 and 14001 standards. Forms can be created rapidly, ensuring version control and helping utilisation on a regular basis. The need for staid, periodic audits of the system is updated with a continuous approach to the management of risks and opportunities.

Process Approach

The process approach is a key revision to the latest standards with impacts both internally and externally. Internally the process approach requires organisations to not only account for physical items (such as materials, components and equipment status) but intangibles such as data, information and knowledge that could affect the quality experienced by the customer. Externally, with increasing supply chain complexity, software creates the ability to interface, monitor suppliers and target problem areas through shared portals. Software provides the ability to manage suppliers consistently across large organisations with multiple departments.

Evidence-based decision making

The revised standards emphasises the need for evidence-based decision making to ensure the desired performance is achieved. With technology comes the ability to correlate and aggregate risks to suit strategic intelligence. The aggregation of data from across departments allows a well constructed system to provide insight into the quality performance at all managerial levels.

ISO 9001 and 14001 2015: Changes and what it means for you - June 2017

The 2015 edition of the 9001 and 14001 standards sees both some significant changes and some minor wording amendments. At the highest level, the 2015 editions use the “Annex SL” harmonised structure. ISO 22301 (Business Continuity) was the first standard to use this approach. Forthcoming revisions of other ISO management system standards and new ones, such as ISO 45001 for health and safety are using the same 10-clause approach. The main implication for the new structure is to support the integration of different management systems enabling improved performance and reduced administration.

 Outward Looking

In previous versions the focus was on customer and regulatory requirements – now the standards mention the need to understand the organisational context and the interested stakeholders along with internal issues that may influence the ability to deliver the desired quality / environmental performance. The new standards references market pressures such as competition, economy and societal needs. The impacts of increased globalisation are referenced through mention of understanding pressures from a local to global scale. CR Plus believes the requirement to monitor stakeholder interests is aimed at producing responsive, nimble systems able to adapt to the external environment and minimise gaps between the ISO system and organisational activity.

Top Management

In previous editions, a “Management Representative” was nominated who was required to monitor system performance and report to management, which frequently isolated top management from active leadership in the management system. The requirement for a management representative has been dropped, with greater emphasis on top management to ensure the system is continuously aligned with the strategic direction.

Documentation Requirements

In the latest version, there are no specific requirements for a documented manual or procedures – your company is left to decide the most appropriate approach for communication and organisation (on the basis of risk and opportunities). The 2015 Standards introduce numerous requirements for documented information to the extent necessary to demonstrate effective implementation

Process Approach

The new ISO 9001 standard has advanced the process approach from the advisory introduction into the requirements under section 4.4. This is focused at ensuring upstream and downstream interactivities and influence on performance are examined and acted upon for coherently – something which was desired but not mandatory in the old standard.

No Exclusions

The old 9001 standard allowed for certain exclusions under appropriate circumstances. The 2015 risk and opportunities approach means the organisation is left to define significance and as a result means no exclusion of clauses is permitted in the 2015 standards.

Don’t miss the boat: Get your ISO 9001 & 14001 transition going in 2017 - June 2017

According to the Quality Digest, as of December 2016 less than 20% of the companies registered to ISO 9001:2008 had migrated their certification to the new 2015 standard. As the September 2018 deadline becomes ever closer on the horizon, Ari Sinai, one of CR Plus’s management systems experts, outlines his thoughts on why starting progress now will be beneficial in the long run.

 Maximise the opportunity 2015 brings

There are fundamental changes to the 9001 and 14001:2015 standards that reduce the administrative burden and address your company’s risks and opportunities. A well-crafted 9001 system should become a business management system, supporting the business growth, sustainability and resilience. Leaving transition activity close to the deadline poses a risk that the true potential of the management system is hidden in a race for compliance.

Ensuring continuous certification

For many companies, including CR Plus, certification is a requirement of business and source of competitive advantage when tendering. The volume of companies needing re-certification before the September 2018 deadline is forecast to put a strain on the availability of auditors, putting your certification at risk and possibly costing more in the process. In addition, due to the changes, the first round of re-certification audits are also likely to be subject to greater variability as the auditors increase their understanding of the standards. Those going for certification close to the deadline date may run a greater risk of non-conformances and delays in certification being granted.

Leadership and senior management

The new ISO standards require greater involvement from the organisation’s leadership. Gone is the management representative requirement and in comes oversight to ensure the system is actively supporting the business strategy. This requires greater input from senior personnel than previously. Transition projects can easily get behind simply through the senior personnel’s workload and schedule demands.

In future news items, CR Plus will be discussing:
  • The changes between the old and new QMS and EMS standards,
  • The impact of technology on ISO systems and,
  • Approach to lifecycle analysis requirements of ISO 14001

Increased Uncertainty & Rising Energy Costs - March 2017

Non Commodity Costs - Latest figures from the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) suggest that the cost of environmental and renewable levies and on energy bills such as Renewable Obligation, Contracts for Difference, Feed-In Tarrifs and the Capacity Market will rise by nearly £13 Billion by 2020

To put this in perspective, for a typical commercial/Industrial business that we often support in implementing cost reduction measures, their bills could be due to increase by 33% by 2020, of which the non commodity element would increase by 70%. This means such a business would have to find and implement substantial energy cost reduction projects, just to stand still on their energy budget.

Uncertainty - Added in to the mix are the changing of energy policy, for example the introduction of the Capacity Market and the scrapping of the CRC. The current forecast for wholesale energy costs over the next 2-3 years is also one of volatility, with various factors such as the political situation (Brexit), supply issues (including French Nuclear on electricity and the Rough storage issues on gas) and of course the impact of the the de-valuation of the pound. All of which strongly suggest businesses will be hit with substantial enrgy price hikes in the coming few years.

ESOS – Our View on the Implications of Brexit - September 2016

We have seen articles stating that the UK Government is drafting the existing European environmental / energy legislation as UK legislation, so that at precisely the same time that the 2 year Lisbon Treaty Article 50 exit period finishes, all of the legislation will come into force in the UK. Only after this will reviews be undertaken by the UK to investigate and make changes to the UK legislative requirements.

Furthermore, the UK has challenging carbon reduction targets in its national legislation, for example the 2008 Climate Change Act sets a target for the 2050 net UK Carbon Account to be at least 80% lower than the 1990 baseline.

Our view is that in post-Brexit Britain carbon reduction legislation will feature significantly. Schemes such as ESOS are very likely to stay – whilst these may be reviewed to see if they can be made more practical and effective, we will only see these changes in the next decade, after the Phase 2 ESOS deadline of 5th December 2019.

Now is therefore the right time to look longer term at your carbon reduction strategy – be it by developing a sustainable framework such as ISO 50001 or by taking advantage of our ESOS Phase 2 special offer.

We recommend you contact us to discuss your strategy and options.

2019 Energy Taxation Changes – Our Opinion & How We Can Help - September 2016

It looks like 2019 will be a significant year for energy taxation changes – a couple of examples being the abolishing of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) and large increases in the Climate Change Levy (CCL) to offset the Government’s lost CRC revenue – for example electricity will increase by over 50% from its current rate to 0.847p/kWh and gas will increase by over 70% from its current rate to 0.339p/kWh.

To try and mitigate the impact for larger users, Climate Change Agreement (CCA) Participants will see their CCL discount percentage increase – for electricity from 90% to 93% and gas from 65% to 78%.

However, we believe that the smaller companies, which are neither CRC or CCA Participants, will be hit the hardest as all they will see is the large increase in CCL on their utility bills.

We can help you offset these changes in a number of ways, such as:
  1. You may be eligible to participate in a CCA – this window of opportunity is closing fast as the last deadline to join is end of October 2016 – so please contact us now to explore your eligibility for this option.
  2. Certain mineralogical and metallurgical processes are eligible for complete exemption from the Climate Change Levy – we can help ascertain whether you are eligible and guide you through the process of obtaining this saving.
  3. CCL is applied to your bill based on your energy consumption – so the less energy you use the less CCL you pay! We can help with our fully comprehensive energy efficiency service
  4. Our energy procurement & utility management service includes visibility of pass-through costs such as CCL as standard, so you get no surprises. Electricity pass-through now accounts for >50% of your total electricity cost!

ESOS Phase 1 Enforcement Update - August 2016

In the July 2016 ESOS Newsletter the Environment Agency announced that it has been looking at corporate data to identify those organisations that should be participating in ESOS and have not yet made their ESOS Phase 1 submission. It has identified 1,700 such companies and The Environment Agency itself is investigating 1,500 of these as they fall under its remit, using its dedicated ESOS Enforcement Team.

To avoid enforcement action we recommend that, if you think you may be one of these companies, you contact us immediately as we have Qualified ESOS Lead Assessors and deliver ESOS work – see our ESOS Phase One webpage for more information including case studies.
